Working Out While Fasting


Jason asks a question. That’s a great
name. He said, “My wife and I decided to do the FMD,” fast mimicking diet. That’s
Valter Longo’s work with the longevity diet. “Did you,” me, “adjust your workouts
for the five days and what was your experience of the FMD on your workout
strength, endurance, etc.?” If you follow what it says in the book or in the in
the in, if you buy the package, it tells you not to workout or sauna that week. So
when I when someone says you’re not gonna work out or sauna that week what I hear
is: go workout and go sauna. What I did notice and, Mitch, he’s one of my trainers
Robert, one of my trainers and Ben Fogle of course we’ll all tell you, that the first,
if I worked. I worked out three days each of those weeks. Three, four, four days
I’m sorry. On day one, there was no drop-off at all. On the last day if I
went from like push up to Prowler for example, there was a lag. There was a
moment when it stood up and do hmm okay. So no I would, I would, I would tell you
this Jason, the first time you do it, just go gentle through it you know. Use all
your freewill all your energy all your habits all your whatever you want to
call it this week self-control whatever it is this week and just try to get
through the fast mimicking diet. Use all your energy to focus on that. If you do
it again, now after the second day I got this, if you decide to do a workout just
kind of if you’d normally would take the workout takes 45 minutes gauge about an
hour, hour and ten minutes. Not ridiculously longer but you might
notice that you just need just a little bit more time between sets and one of
the reasons I kind of struggled as people knew I was on the FMD so between
sets they would ask me questions about the workout so my workouts just got
longer and in hindsight I would almost build that in: longer rest periods. So for
my strength the hit was almost nothing. For what whatever you want to call
workout endurance there was a little bit of a hit but it
could be just cuz I wasn’t being very tough. I mean I was oh woe is me you
know I’m on a fast you know look I’m a hero. But uh you know it’s
like try to explain to people many times in my career
this is fasting and this is starvation. You choose to fast
okay so you’re not a hero you just you’re just not eating okay
