What Roles Has Arnold Schwarzenegger Turned Down? | CASTING CALLS

– [Narrator] Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the biggest movie
stars of all time literally, but he’s also missed out on
some blockbusters along the way. – (speaking in Spanish) baby. (dinging) (whooshing) (metallic whooshing) – [Narrator] Schwarzenegger was
known only for bodybuilding, when he appeared on “The
New Dating Game” in 1973, his first foray into Hollywood. From there he began working his way up mainly through small TV roles before being considered for
“The Incredible Hulk” series, producers wanted someone
even taller though and the 6’2 Schwarzenegger lost the role to 6’3 and a half fellow
bodybuilder, Lou Ferrigno. Schwarzenegger also
auditioned for the title roles in 1978’s “Superman” and
1980’s “Flash Gordon”, but in both cases his
accent was deemed too strong and he lost the parts to Christopher Reeve and Sam J Jones respectively. Also around that time,
Arnold was being considered to play Fezzik in an adaptation
of “The Princess Bride”, but the movie stalled for nearly a decade, before being made with
Andre the Giant in the role. – It’s not my fault being the
biggest and the strongest. I don’t even exercise. – [Narrator] After Schwarzenegger
caught his big break with 1982’s “Conan the Barbarian”, producer Mike Medavoy
approached Schwarzenegger for “The Terminator” to play Kyle Reese, but James Cameron later felt
he would make a better machine and convinced Arnold to change roles. – My database does not encompass the dynamics of human peer bonding. – [Narrator] By the late ’80s, Schwarzenegger was a bona fide superstar and turned down Adam Baldwin’s
role in “Full Metal Jacket” to make “Commando” and “Predator”, he even passed on “Die Hard”, which was at one time pitched
as a “Commando” sequel. At least he got a shout out from the movie’s star, Bruce Willis. – [John] They got
missiles, automatic weapons and enough plastic explosives to orbit Arnold Schwarzenegger. – [Narrator] Schwarzenegger
was the original choice for “RoboCop”, but producers
worried he looked too big in the costume and replaced
him with Peter Weller. Arnold did get to work with the director, Paul Verhoeven on his next movie though after replacing Patrick
Swayze in “Total Recall”. In the early ’90s,
Schwarzenegger was in talks to play Doctor Octopus
in a Cameron directed “Spider-Man” movie, that
never came to fruition. Other movies Arnold was set
to star in met similar endings including an “I Am
Legend” with Ridley Scott a decade before Will Smith’s version, a live action “Curious
George” with Schwarzenegger as The Man in the Yellow Hat and a “Watchmen” movie
years before Zack Snyder’s, where Arnold would have
played Dr. Manhattan. – I am tired of the same old faces. – [Narrator] In the mid-’90s
after passing on two movies that went to Sylvester Stallone, “Assassins” and “Judge
Dredd”, a movie was written for he and Sly to costar
in called “Face/Off”, that was instead made with
John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, the latter of whom also starred in another movie Schwarzenegger
passed on, “The Rock”, but to be fair, Arnold
only saw a partial script. – You mean I’m going, going out there? – [Narrator] The list of other
action parts he passed on or was in consideration for over the years is so long, it could give you a tumor. – It’s not a tumor at all. – [Narrator] Harrison
Ford’s in “Air Force One”, Jean-Claude Van Damme’s in “Sudden Death”, Kevin Sorbo’s in “Kull the Conqueror”, Val Kilmer’s in “The Saint”, Bruce Willis’ in “Armageddon”, Samuel L Jackson’s role in “S.W.A.T” and Jim Caviezel’s in “The
Count of Monte Cristo”, which he turned down to
do the “Last Action Hero”. – You think you’re funny, don’t ya? – I know I am. – [Narrator] Schwarzenegger
returns to theaters this fall in “Terminator: Dark Fate” once again honoring his
most famous movie line. – I’ll be back. (eerie music) (metallic whooshing)
