Yoga vs Pilates: what’s the difference?



There are many different forms of yoga
and Pilates that you can use to help prevent injury. Ashtanga Yoga – This is a
fast, athletic and physically demanding form of yoga. It combines a series of
ancient postures that flow with the breath. As you synchronise your breath
with the flowing sequence of movements, your mind moves into a meditative and
calm state, while your body becomes stronger and more mobile. Hatha yoga is a
generic term used to encompass many different yoga styles. The Eastern
discipline focuses on building strength and flexibility, while staying connected
to your breath. Iyengar yoga – a type of Hatha yoga, promotes
the fundamentals of how to align correctly using props, such as blocks and
belts, to enable a longer hold and a better pose understanding. This type of
Hatha yoga plays close attention to the precise alignment of each posture, it is
the practice of precision. The teacher will guide you through a series of
asanas, with clear demonstrations, detailed instructions and hands-on
adjustments in a safe and methodical way. Over time, other postures are added
including forward and back bends twists inversions and restorative poses. Yin yoga
is a slower paced, more meditative style of yoga, where you typically adopt a
seated posture for somewhere between three to five minutes. This allows you to
get deeper into the connective tissue and find space within the body, something
that you're unable to do so well in the more dynamic forms of yoga. Vinyasa yoga
is a graceful and energising practice, linking breath with movements. Class pace
style and intensity vary, but the emphasis will always be placed on
harmonising the movements of the body and breath. Pilates is a fantastic technique to help
strengthen and balance the muscles in your body. It helps you recover from
injury but also to prevent injury, by working on your posture and range of
movement. Clinical Pilates is a small rehabilitation class led by the senior
physiotherapist at Nuffield Health. To ensure your suitability you must be
assessed by one of the physiotherapists because the class is tailored to your
individual needs. Fitness Pilates includes many of the mat work exercises
from the traditional Pilates repertoire. It also offers modifications and updated
exercise prescription, to provide a controlled body conditioning program,
that's suitable for everyone. So by choosing the right form of Pilates or
yoga that suits you, you can build a stronger and more flexible body. This
will help you not only prevent injury, but also recover from injury too
