NSA Souda Bay Service Members Participate in Strong Man Competition


MORALE, WELFARE AND RECREATION HOSTED A STRONG
MAN COMPETITION FOR SERVICE MEMBERS AT NSA SOUDA BAY. THE FIRST PLACE CONTESTANT, BUILDER CONSTRUCTIONMAN
RECRUIT, PHILIP VANDERHARTEN, HAD MORE THAN TRAINING IN THIS COMPETITION. “IT WAS AMAZING I MEAN WHEN I WAS PULLING
THE TRUCK AND JUST THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE COURSE I HAD ALL MY SEABEES AROUND ME SUPPORTING
ME, MOTIVATING ME, YOU KNOW, YELLING AND KEEPING ME GOING. THAT’S WHAT REALLY HELPED ME WIN
THIS.” WITH PRIOR TRAINING AND SUPPORT FROM A CHEERING
CROWD HE TOOK ADVANTAGE FROM ONE MORE TACTIC TO HELP HIM SUCCEED. “I HAD THE FORTUNATE ADVANTAGE TO WATCH A
LOT OF PEOPLE TO GO BEFORE ME AND AS THEY CAME OFF I WOULD ASK THEM WHAT WAS THE HARDEST
THING, ANY HINTS. THEY SAID THAT THE TRUCK PULL WAS NOT THE HARDEST, BELIEVE IT OR NOT,
IT WAS THE TIRES.” SEVEN MARINES ALSO COMPETED IN THIS GRUELING
