Choral Warm-ups: Brain gym | James Davey

Hi, I'm James Davey. In this short video
we're going to be finding out what brain gym is and how it can make learning more efficient in rehearsal. We're going to think about waking up the brain and
we're going to use an exercise that is commonly termed as 'brain gym'. It helps
finding a sense of spatial awareness and the concept behind it is that
somehow it connects the two sides of our brain by doing what we call cross
lateral exercises. Something where one side of the body is doing one task
whilst the other side of the body is doing something different. And this is a
very famous exercise that most of you may have done before. I'd like you to
pat up and down on top of your head and paint circles on your tummy. Okay and
first of all, really concentrate on the patting hand. Make sure it's not circular
patting movements in sympathy with the other hand, but really up and down. Very
good. Now change the direction of the circles on your tummy and just feel how
it does seem, for a lot of us, to take a little bit of a different part of the
brain, all of a sudden. Very good. Now some of you have chosen your right hand to
pat on your head and some your left hand. Swap hands. Well done and change the
direction of the circles. Super. We're going to now get to switch action, so we're going to pat in and out on our tummy and paint circles above our head. Good.
Change the direction of the circles. Are you still patting? Well done and swap
hands. Very good.
